Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India in August. He will serve for a short term of 74 days and will retire on November 8 as judges of the Supreme Court must retire at the age of 65. Lalit replaced NV Ramana who demitted the office on August 26. Lalit enrolled as an advocate in 1983. He practised at the Bombay High Court till 1985 and shifted to Delhi in 1986. He became a senior advocate in the Supreme Court in 2004 and was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2014. He was a part of many significant verdicts during his tenure as a Supreme Court judge.
