Jason Arday, a man from the UK who could not read or write till he was 18 years old, has been appointed as a professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge, UK. At the age of 37, he is the youngest-ever black professor at the university. Born and brought up in Clapham, southwest London, Arday was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and global development delay in his childhood. He couldn’t speak till he was 11 years of age and could not read or write till he was 18. He was told that he would need continuous assistance right through his life. In Arday’s late teens, he started to read and write. He then went on to obtain two master’s degrees and a PhD in educational studies.
