Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, a senior scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is leading India’s third lunar exploration mission, Chandrayaan-3. The mission, which aims to explore the Moon’s south pole, was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on July 14. Well-known as India’s ‘rocket woman’, Srivastava was the deputy operations director of Mangalyaan, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). She was also the mission director of Chandrayaan-2, which was launched in 2019. Srivastava completed her MTech degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru and joined ISRO in 1997. She has been honoured with numerous awards including the ISRO Young Scientist Award and the Women Achievers in Aerospace, 2017 award for her contributions.
