Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia, launched a high-speed railway service worth $7.3 billion, connecting Indonesia’s Jakarta to Bandung on October 2. Called Whoosh, this railway project is largely financed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative and is the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia. The trains operating on this railway line can reach speeds of 350kms per hour, reducing the travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from three hours to 40 minutes. The railway line stretches across 142.3kms and the trains running on it are powered by electrical energy, which will curb Indonesia’s carbon emissions.
