As per the ‘Status of Snow Leopards in India’ report released by the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, there are approximately 718 snow leopards in India. The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) programme was a scientific exercise that aimed at estimating the number of snow leopards in the country and was carried out by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) with the help of World Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF-India) and Nature Conservation Foundation in Mysuru. The study found that Ladakh has the highest number of snow leopards followed by Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh.
