Indian diplomat Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been named India’s next ambassador to the USA by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Kwatra replaced Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who retired in January. Kwatra, who is a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has more than 30 years of experience in foreign affairs and has served in numerous countries including USA, France and China. Previously, Kwatra served in various roles including as India’s foreign secretary from 2022 to 2024 and as the joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office from 2015 to 2017. He also held the post of minister (commerce) in the Indian embassy in Washington DC, USA, and led the MEA’s policy, planning and research division.
