A US scientist of Indian origin named Shrinivas R Kulkarni has been honoured with the 2024 Shaw Prize in Astronomy in recognition of his contributions to the field of time-domain astronomy. The award recognises his work on astronomical events such as gamma-ray bursts, millisecond pulsars and supernovae. Kulkarni was instrumental in creating the Palomar Transient Factory and the Zwicky Transient Facility, projects that have enhanced scientists’ understanding of transient astronomical events. A professor at the California Institute of Technology, USA, Kulkarni served as the director of the Caltech Optical Observatories from 2006 to 2018. He was born in Maharashtra and is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
