  • The decision to restart the Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS), a system that gathers data and enables weather prediction, has been taken by India and the USA.
  • The system comprises 36 moored buoys placed in the high seas that collect detailed atmospheric and oceanic information. The repair and maintenance of these buoys was hindered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The moored buoys of the IndOOS are part of the Research Moored Array for African-Asian- Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA) Programme and help in collecting vital data.
  • Officials of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the organisations that set up RAMA in 2008, planned to restart the system during a recent meeting and decided to take the necessary steps for the same.
