A new ‘360-degree appraisal system’ to evaluate officers has been implemented by the Indian Navy. The traditional appraisal system adopted by the navy had a ‘top-down’ approach and the feedback of only the seniors of a navy officer were considered for promotion. Under the new initiative, feedback from subordinates and peers of the officer will also be acquired so that the navy officer’s impact on their juniors is quantified. The feedback will be obtained through large-scale surveys that include various aspects such as the officers’ leadership qualities and professional knowledge. This new system enables an extensive evaluation of an officer before the promotion decision is made.
