Meena Kandasamy, an Indian author, poet, feminist and activist, was awarded the Hermann Kesten Prize, presented by the PEN Centre in Germany’s Darmstadt. The award, which will be presented to her on November 15 in Germany, honours her efforts in support of victimised journalists and authors. Chennai-born Kandasami’s work focuses on problems of patriarchy, gender, caste and ethnic oppression. Her works have been shortlisted for awards such as the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Hindu Lit Prize and the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Her noteworthy works include ‘The Gypsy Goddess’, ‘Touch’ and ‘Ms Militancy’.
