India has excelled in the Global Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 2024, submitting over 1,000 bird species and ranking second globally. From February 16 to 19, 2024, birding enthusiasts nationwide documented 1,036 species, contributing over 61,000 checklists to the event. Kerala led in checklists, while West Bengal reported the highest number of species. The event marked India’s 12th consecutive year of participation and showcased the country’s rich avifauna diversity. Some of the species spotted include the Andaman serpent-eagle, Andaman woodpecker, Nilgiri laughingthrush, white-headed starling, Nilgiri sholakili, white-bellied blue flycatcher, Andaman treepie and white-bellied sholakili.
