Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav launched the ‘Fauna of India Checklist Portal’, a collection that lists all of India’s fauna, on June 30.
The list comprises over 1 lakh species and also includes data on species that are endangered, scheduled and endemic.
This checklist makes India the first country in the world to document all its fauna species. It was unveiled on the Zoological Survey of India’s (ZSI) 109th Foundation Day in Kolkata.
The portal is expected to help protect biodiversity and will aid policymakers in coming up with efficient policies to protect animals and their habitat.
According to Yadav, the portal will be a rich source of information for academicians, taxonomists, conservationists and researchers.
