  • Cyclone Fengal, whose name is derived from the Arabic language, made landfall close to Puducherry in South India in late November, causing destruction in several areas.
  • Fengal gave rise to intense winds and heavy rainfall that affected Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala and Karnataka. Though the cyclone was categorised as a low-intensity storm, it led to flooding, damaged infrastructure, disrupted power supply and caused deaths.
  • As a result of Fengal, Puducherry received 48.4cms of rain in a 24-hour period, which is the highest in the past three decades.
  • The Indian Army, Indian Navy, National Disaster Response Force and other teams undertook rescue operations to aid the victims of Cyclone Fengal. To support disaster relief efforts, the central government has provided Tamil Nadu with 945 crore.
