The final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 was a humbling affair for India. The Indian team, which had won all its 10 matches coming into the final, was defeated by the Australian team, which won with a resounding six-wicket victory.
Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, was awarded the cup by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
India lost the toss and was put in to bat. But after Rohit Sharma’s departure, Indian wickets began to fall at regular intervals. The Australian team’s planning and execution were spot on and their strategic bowling changes ensured Indian batsmen struggled through the middle overs.
Though two members of the Indian team did score in their 50s, the morale in the batting line-up seemed low. In the second half of the game, after the initial three wickets, Indian bowlers found it tough to get the men in yellow out.
Virat Kohli was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his extraordinary display through the series.
The winning team took home US$ 4 million (approximately ₹33 crore) and India won US$ 2 million (around ₹16 crore) in prize money.
