In August, the first train line that is fully powered by hydrogen began operations in Germany. Called Coradia iLint trains, these trains are part of a $92.3 million project by Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG), a German state subsidiary, and Alstom, a French manufacturing company. Five of these trains began operations in August and nine more will begin operations by the end of the year, replacing 15 diesel trains. These trains are powered by hydrogen fuel cells that produce electricity, which enables propulsion. The trains operate with almost no noise and emit only condensed water and steam, unlike diesel trains that emit polluting gases. Italy and France have also opted to use these eco-friendly hydrogen-powered trains.
