The world’s first commercial ferry fuelled completely by hydrogen commenced operations on USA’s San Francisco Bay on July 19. Named MV Sea Change, this catamaran measures 70ft in length and is capable of functioning for 16 hours before requiring a fuel refill. It can accommodate 75 passengers and will run free of charge for the first six months. The hydrogen fuel cells that power the ferry combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity and discharge only water in the process. This ferry is part of a pilot programme that aims to decrease harmful carbon emissions by phasing out vessels that run on diesel.
