- Senior citizens across India who are 70 years and above will now be provided with free health insurance under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This initiative, which is an extension of the AB PM-JAY, was approved by the Union Cabinet on September 11.
- Under this initiative, senior citizens will be provided with health insurance coverage of `5 lakh per year, no matter their income bracket. This initiative’s initial outlay is `3,437 crore and it is expected to positively impact nearly 6 crore senior citizens.
- With this, the government aims to provide better healthcare protection to the elderly.
- Senior citizens including those belonging to families enrolled in the AB PM-JAY and those covered under private and public health insurance schemes can benefit from the provision.
