To prevent Delhi and its neighbouring areas from flooding caused by the Yamuna River, the Haryana government has planned to construct a dam around 4.5kms upstream from the Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar. Its reservoir will stretch over a length of 14kms and once completed, it will possess a capacity of 10.82 lakh cusecs. Apart from reducing the effects of flooding in the region, the dam will provide Haryana with financial benefits from extra irrigation water, aquaculture and groundwater recharge. The dam, which will cost ₹6,134 crore to build, is also expected to produce 250 MW of electricity.
