- Numerous cases of a neurological disease called Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported in Pune and Mumbai since the beginning of the year.
- According to experts, the disease can occur shortly after a person suffers from a viral infection, however, they are uncertain about its exact cause. Experts believe the disease occurs when a person’s nerves are erroneously attacked by their immune system, leading to paralysis.
- The symptoms of the disease include body pain, numbness of the hands and feet, weakening of muscles and trouble swallowing, breathing and moving.
- The disease cannot be transmitted between people. Experts believe that contaminated water could be among the contributing factors to the surge in cases.
