According to experts, the disease can occur shortly after a person suffers from a viral infection, however, they are uncertain about its exact cause. Experts believe the disease occurs when a person’s nerves are erroneously attacked by their immune system, leading to paralysis.
The symptoms of the disease include body pain, numbness of the hands and feet, weakening of muscles and trouble swallowing, breathing and moving.
The disease cannot be transmitted between people. Experts believe that contaminated water could be among the contributing factors to the surge in cases.
