The raging forest fires that started on March 5 on the slopes of the Western Ghats in Goa have destroyed the biodiversity in the region. The fires lasted for more than 10 days and have been described as the worst forest fires experienced by the state. They have affected ecologically sensitive areas, which are inhabited by many species including some that have never been studied by scientists. Over 400 personnel, the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy helicopters joined the firefighting efforts by pouring water on affected areas. Observing the nature of the fires, conservationists and authorities believe that the fires were started by humans who want to convert cultivable land and forests into concrete jungles.
