June 01, 2023

According to the United Nations (UN), the world’s glaciers melted at a very high speed in 2022 and the sea level rose by an average of 4.62mm per year between 2013 and 2022, which is twice the rate at which it rose two decades ago. Some European glaciers lost more than 4ft of average thickness in one year. According to experts, high concentrations of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide have led to the melting of glaciers, and this could limit the supply of fresh water in the future. Extreme weather conditions that are caused by the emission of greenhouse gases may persist till the 2060s.

During the Ice Age, glaciers covered almost 32% of the Earth’s total land area.
