Scientists have discovered water frost on volcanoes in Mars’ equatorial region, which is an unexpected phenomenon. The water frost was found on the volcanoes’ calderas, huge holes formed after volcanic eruptions, and is capable of filling approximately 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Scientists made this discovery with the help of images taken by a high-definition camera on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and cameras on board other probes orbiting the Red Planet. Scientists were unable to detect the water frost on the volcanoes until recently as the frosty patches only develop in the early morning and during colder seasons.
