Subhash Dandekar, founder of popular stationery brand Camlin, passed away on July 15 in Mumbai at the age of 86. Camlin, known earlier as Dandekar and Company, was founded by Dandekar’s father and his father’s brother in 1931. The company initially manufactured ink. Dandekar took charge of the business in 1960 and played a vital role in expanding it to include educational products, art materials and other products. The company was renamed as Camlin during his tenure. The company also diversified into fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals under Dandekar’s guidance. In 2011, a Japanese company named Kokuyo acquired a majority stake in Camlin, after which Dandekar had been associated with the company as chairman emeritus.
