Former Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan took charge as the new chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on August 1. Sudan, who is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1983 batch, will serve in the position till April 2025. She replaced Manoj Soni and is the second woman to serve as the UPSC’s chairperson after Rose Millian Bathew Kharbuli. Previously, Sudan has worked in the Ministry of Women and Child Development and has also held the post of secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution. She was instrumental in the initiation of important programmes such as ‘Ayushman Bharat’ and ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’.
