Heavy rains in Kenya from March to May led to devastating floods in the country. Over 200 people lost their lives, while hundreds of others were injured.
Landslides and floodwater swept away infrastructure and homes, displacing thousands of people. Nairobi was among Kenya’s worst-affected places.
Staff and tourists who were trapped in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok due to the flooding of River Talek were evacuated using helicopters.
Experts attribute the increase in the region’s rainfall to a climate pattern called the El Niño phenomenon. Additionally, unplanned urbanisation, poor drainage systems, increased population and reduction in open spaces increased the severity of floods in the region.
