Veteran lawyer Sue Carr created history by becoming the first woman to serve as the most senior judge for England and Wales ever since the role was created in the 13th century. The 58-year-old will take up the role of lord chief justice on October 1 after the retirement of Lord Chief Justice Ian Burnett who holds the position currently. Carr’s judicial career commenced in 2009 when she became a criminal judge; she has been serving as lady justice of appeal since 2020. She studied at Trinity College Cambridge in the UK and became a barrister in 1987.
