Deepika Misra created history by becoming the first woman officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF) to receive a gallantry award. Wing Commander Misra, a helicopter pilot and qualified flying instructor, was presented a Vayu Sena Medal for displaying outstanding courage while carrying out a flood relief operation in Madhya Pradesh in 2021. In the rescue effort that lasted for almost a week, she saved the lives of 47 people including women and children by braving harsh weather conditions and strong winds. She was the first respondent to reach the affected region. Misra, who hails from Rajasthan, was presented the award by Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari at an investiture ceremony held in New Delhi.
