Indhu Rubasingham has been appointed as the director and joint chief executive of UK’s National Theatre, which makes her the first female to hold the post in the theatre’s history. She will assume her new role in 2025, succeeding Rufus Norris who is the organisation’s current director and chief executive. 53-year-old Rubasingham has been serving as the artistic director of London’s Kiln Theatre since 2012. She headed various initiatives during her tenure, including the upgradation of the theatre with many modern features, and directed numerous plays including ‘Handbagged’, ‘A Wolf in Snakeskin Shoes’ and ‘Red Velvet’. Rubasingham was born to Sri Lankan Tamil parents in Sheffield, UK, in 1970 and studied drama at the University of Hull, UK.
