Jaya Verma Sinha was appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) and chairperson of the Railway Board by the central government on August 31. She is the first woman to be employed in this capacity in the 166-year history of the Indian Railways and assumed charge of the office on September 1. In her new role in the Railway Board, which is the apex decision-making entity for the Indian Railways, Sinha will be in charge of overseeing passenger services and transportation of freight. She graduated from the University of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and joined the Indian Railways in 1988 as an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer. In her career spanning 35 years, she has worked across numerous fields including vigilance, operations and information technology.
