On June 4, Katya Echazarreta became the first Mexican-born woman to fly to space, in Blue Origin’s fifth human spaceflight. Echazarreta, along with five other crewmembers, flew on a New Shepard rocket. The 26-year-old engineer and science communicator is the second Mexican to fly to space after Rodolfo Neri Vela, who was part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Space Shuttle mission in 1985. Echazarreta’s flight was sponsored by the non-profit organisation, Space for Humanity. She was chosen from a pool of more than 7,000 applicants from 100 countries. Echazarreta, who grew up in Guadalajara in Mexico, is also one of the youngest women to fly to space.
