Fara: Rice Flour Dumplings

Fara is a North Indian dish made from rice flour and makes for a simple, scrumptious snack.

INGREDIENTS

  • ¾ cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • Salt to taste

For the tempering >>

  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • Red chilli powder to taste

METHOD

  • In a bowl, mash the cooked rice. Add the rice flour and mix well.
  • Add salt to taste and knead the dough with lukewarm water.
  • Let the dough rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Make small balls out of the dough and roll them into long sticks with your palm.
  • Steam the fara for 10 minutes.
  • To a kadhai, add 2 tablespoons oil. When it’s hot, add the mustard seeds, let them crackle and then add the sesame seeds, curry leaves and dried red chilli. When the sesame seeds pop, add the red chilli powder.

  • Serve with tomato chutney or any chutney of your choice

Note: As a variation, add julienned vegetables to the oil and sauté well before adding the fara.
