Chinese and Canadian scientists have discovered an extremely rare fossil in Liaoning province, China. The 125-million-year-old fossil is of two animals locked in mortal combat—a badger-like mammal known as Repenomamus robustus and the Psittacosaurus dinosaur. The animals were buried in a mudslide caused by a sudden volcanic eruption. This unique fossil captures the exact moment of attack and is among the first evidence of mammals that preyed on dinosaurs. This discovery will enhance scientists’ understanding of the predator-prey relationship in prehistoric times.
