Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, have developed solar cells that are thinner than human hair. These solar cells are made using semiconducting inks and are fixed to a fabric that is lightweight, making it convenient for them to be installed on a variety of surfaces.

These solar cells are durable, have the ability to generate 18 times more power per kilogram and are 1/100th the weight of standard solar panels. Researchers aim to use these cells in locations where generating solar power is difficult, such as in remote villages, on boats in the sea and during disaster recovery operations in remote locations.
