The European Environmental Agency (EEA) has found that chemical pollution has affected most of Europe’s surface water, leaving merely a third of it in good health. As per the report, through the 2015 to 2021 timespan, 77% of the groundwater in Europe and 29% of the surface water in the region attained acquired the ‘good’ chemical status. Experts attribute pesticides and emissions from coal combustion and other contaminants to the degradation of surface water. EEA officials have urged EEA member states to adopt eco-friendly agricultural processes, reduce the use of pesticides and minimise water consumption to protect water bodies such as lakes and rivers.
