When Tamil Nadu’s 2023-24 budget was presented, it was announced that the state will get its 18th wildlife sanctuary in Erode, named Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary will be spread across 80,567 hectares of forest area in Anthiyur and Gobichettipalayam talukas and house 118 butterfly species, 21 mammal species and 136 bird species. A special committee will be formed to decide the exact location of the sanctuary.
