According to research conducted by scientists at the University of British Columbia, Canada, climate change could lead to the loss of 30% of the nutrients present in seafood in low-income countries. The study found that in a high carbon emissions and low mitigation scenario, the availability of various nutrients including protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium is expected to decrease in the seafood of lower-income nations and higher-income nations. However, the extent to which the nutrients of seafood in the tropical waters of low-income nations are projected to decrease is much higher than that of higher-income nations. It is estimated that the nutrient availability in seafood of countries such as Sierra Leone and Nigeria will reduce by around 12% per unit of warming by the end of the century. Among all the nutrients, the availability of calcium is expected to reduce the most.
