Educationist and founder-chancellor of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu. He will replace one of the retired nominated members in the Upper House of the Parliament. Sandhu, who is the son of a farmer, faced many difficulties acquiring an education during his childhood and was determined to contribute to the field of education. In 2001, he founded the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in Mohali and went on to found Chandigarh University in 2012. He has provided numerous students with financial support to pursue their education. Sandhu is also a social worker and undertakes health and welfare initiatives through his non-governmental organisations—the New India Development Foundation (NID) and the Indian Minorities Foundation.
