An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Taiwan’s east coast on April 3, killing at least 16 people and injuring over 900. The epicentre of the earthquake was close to Hualien City.
The earthquake caused severe destruction including collapsed buildings, damaged infrastructure and power cuts. Around 70 miners were stuck in mines in Hualien County due to the quake.
The earthquake, which is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in 25 years, was followed by numerous aftershocks with magnitudes greater than 4.
Authorities carried out rescue operations to free people trapped in the debris for days after the calamity. Helicopters were used to rescue people trapped in mines.
