Over 45,000 people were killed as a result of the earthquakes.
The first quake that hit southern Turkey close to the border of Syria had a magnitude of 7.8 and is believed to be the most fatal and destructive earthquake this decade according to seismologists. This was followed by another quake, which was around 7.6 in magnitude, and several aftershocks.
