Sarita Mali, the daughter of a garland seller in Mumbai, has secured admission to USA’s University of California, Santa Barbara, for a doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree. The 28-year-old completed her master of arts (MA) and master of philosophy (MPhil) and is currently pursuing her PhD in Hindi literature at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. She started pursuing her MPhil at JNU at the age of 22 years, making her one of the youngest scholars in the university. Though Mali faced many difficulties in her life, she never gave up. She considers securing admission at JNU a turning point in her life. Mali has appealed to the government to set up more public-funded universities so that more students like her can pursue their studies.
