Researchers at the University of Tubingen, Germany, found that crows can recognise numbers and count aloud up to four. For the study, researchers trained carrion crows to produce between one to four caws based on auditory and visual signs given to them. It was observed that the caws produced by the crows matched the number shown to them most of the time. Researchers also observed that for numerals with higher values, the crows paused before cawing, suggesting that they preplanned the number of caws. The study shows that the process used by crows to comprehend the information provided to them and count is similar to that of human toddlers learning to count.
