Scientists at Drexel University, USA, have developed concrete that can heat itself up and melt ice and snow naturally. For this, they made use of low-temperature liquid paraffin, a phase-change material (PCM), in the concrete mixture that warms the concrete. The liquid paraffin gives out heat when it transforms into its solid state from its liquid state as the temperature approaches freezing levels. This release of heat melts ice and snow, eliminating the need to use salt and shovels to get rid of ice on footpaths, roads and highways.
