Charaideo Moidams Recognised by UNESCO

The ‘moidams’ located in Assam’s Charaideo district have been included in the World Heritage Sites list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

  • The ‘moidams’ located in Assam’s Charaideo district have been included in the World Heritage Sites list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • Moidams are burial structures, which are the resting places of queens, kings and other royals belonging to the Ahom Dynasty. They resemble mounds and their height differs based on the status of the people buried inside them.
  • There are 90 moidams at the site, which were built around seven centuries ago. These moidams have been included in the Cultural Property category of the World Heritage List, making the site the first from Northeast India to be included in the category.
  • The inclusion of the site on the World Heritage List is expected to boost tourism in Northeast India.
