Changing History

International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18 annually to highlight the importance of museums. Museums play a significant role in helping people understand the culture and history of different places. They also remind people of historical figures who have been instrumental in shaping the modern world.

Many political leaders, scientists, philosophers and other influential figures have impacted society over the course of history. To celebrate International Museum Day, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers which historical figure they would like to be and what they would change in history. Here’s what they had to say.

I would like to be Henry Ford. Ford established a lucrative company called the Ford Motor Company. This company is one of the largest automobile companies and has been running for very long. Ford made significant contributions to the development of the company, its production processes and its products. If I were given a chance to be Henry Ford, I would design cars and make them in a manner that they could be upgraded easily. This would ensure that classic cars would be popular and trending forever.

If I were given a chance, I would like to be Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of a European nation. She served as the prime minister of the United Kingdom and won the general elections three times in a row! Since she was brave and always stood up for what she believed in, people called her the ‘Iron Lady’. Though she lost the elections initially, she did not give up. Thatcher was one of the youngest female politicians and inspired a lot of other girls to become politicians. If I were Margaret Thatcher, I would use my experience to motivate girls to take up positions of power in the world. I would also conduct donation drives to help people in need.

India’s history is fascinating and full of fabulous stories. If I had a chance to be any historical figure, I would like to be Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. I would fulfil all of Bose’s unfulfilled dreams. I would promote unity and not let India and Pakistan be separated. I would also work towards promoting unity in Bengal. I would build strong relationships between India and other countries. I would commit to improving the social, political and economic condition of India and make it a better country. I would come up with a strategy that would encourage people to not beg for freedom, but instead snatch freedom from the British, by employing the weapon of unity.

I would like to be Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of our country. In his position, Nehru had many opportunities to change the present and future of India. If I had a chance to be Nehru, I would favour free market capitalism and socialism equally as it is important to make a profit in the present day. Also, I would focus on India’s expansion and make it bigger. I would have accepted Nepal’s offer to join us. I would also work to ensure that India got a permanent seat in the United Nations to promote peace and harmony. I would not trust China and change my approach while dealing with the country. I would work very hard to promote democracy and education throughout India.

I would like to be Fritz Haber who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1918. If it weren’t for him, people would have starved to death. His invention of the Haber process, a method used to obtain ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen gases, helped in the development of fertilisers. This method created a revolution in the fertiliser industry and helped cope with the decline in agricultural produce. Haber is also known for aiding the development of chemical weapons and explosives during World War I, which killed many people. He earned a bad reputation due to this. If I were in Haber’s place, I would refrain from contributing to the development of destructive chemicals. I would use my knowledge and intelligence for the betterment of society.

RobinAge Cover Story - Changing History

If I had the opportunity to be a historical figure and change history, I would like to be Franz Ferdinand. Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated when they visited Sarajevo in 1914. If I were in Ferdinand’s place, I would flee and avoid being assassinated. I would try to be amicable with Franz Joseph, the emperor of Austria at the time. The assassination of Ferdinand triggered World War I and thousands of lives were lost. The war also gave rise to World War II, in which many more people died.
