A British-Indian data scientist named Smital Dhake won the UK’s RailStaff Awards 2023 in the category of ‘Newcomer of the Year’. The RailStaff Awards recognise the efforts and contributions of people who work in the UK’s rail industry. Dhake works with Alstom, a multinational firm that provides mobility solutions, and is the only data scientist at the company. She is currently based at the company’s Hatfield office in Hertfordshire, England, and is part of the company’s Digital and Integrated Systems (D&IS) UK signalling division. She works on the Modular Advanced Route Setting (M-ARS) system, which employs machine learning methods to predict future occurrences and improve the functioning of the railway. The 26-year-old was born in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon. She acquired her master’s degree in robotics from King’s College London, UK.
