Bookworm vs. Couch Patato

Dhwani Singh, Class 7, BGS Public School, Bengaluru

Being a writer presents its challenges. Amidst the somber backdrop of reality, one must craft tales of joy and triumph. This demands a level of admiration, for authors navigate the delicate balance between reality and fantasy. Particularly commendable are those who risk their commercial success to infuse their narratives with poignant moments, earning them even greater esteem. Indeed, the emotional tone of a chapter often mirrors the author’s mood, underscoring the intimate connection between creator and creation.

Yet, in a world where digital distractions reign supreme, some of us eschew the allure of viral videos in favor of the timeless appeal of children’s literature. While I don’t maintain a regular writing routine, attributing it to my own indolence, I’ve nevertheless produced pieces of which I’m proud. However, this discourse isn’t about my modest literary endeavors; it’s a reflection on the broader literary landscape, as the title aptly suggests.

Regrettably, many fail to appreciate the profound wisdom concealed within the pages of books, dismissing them as insignificant. Yet, those who delve deep into these tomes often find themselves ensnared by their allure, discovering the addictive nature of literary exploration. Personally, I’d choose the weathered pages of a timeworn tome over the glare of a gleaming television screen any day—a sentiment, I believe, shared by many fellow bibliophiles.

While the term “readaholic” might not grace the pages of the Oxford dictionary, it resonates deeply with those who find solace and enrichment in the written word. As Roald Dahl, a luminary of literature, eloquently penned:

“Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.”
The power of Dahl’s words is self-evident,
a plea to embrace the transformative potential of literature over the passive consumption of televised content.
Only those devoid of discernment could remain unmoved by such a compelling entreaty.
