Thousands of birds, including penguins and pelicans, and numerous sea lions have been killed in Peru’s protected areas due to the H5N1 bird flu virus. The first case of the H5N1 virus was recorded in the north of Peru in November 2022 and over 60,000 birds in the country have died of the virus since then.
