Researchers at the California Institute of Technology, USA, have created biohybrid robotic jellyfish that can gather information while navigating the sea. Researchers fitted the jellyfish with an electronic pacemaker, which enhances their movement, enabling them to swim faster. They also fitted the jellyfish with 3D-printed forebodies—tiny hat-like objects, where electronics including sensors can be attached. Researchers tested the fish equipped with the two technologies and found that they were able to swim around 4.5 times faster compared to natural jellyfish. These biohybrid jellyfish will help scientists collect climate-related data such as salinity levels and ocean temperatures.
