Bhutan’s king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, has announced plans to build an ‘international city’ spanning an area of 1,000sq kms near India’s border. Called the Gelephu Special Administrative Region (SAR), this city will act as an economic corridor that links South Asia to Southeast Asia. The new city will be located in Sarpang district in southern Bhutan and will be an autonomous economic hub with distinct governing policies and laws. The project includes the construction of an airport and is expected to attract foreign investments, strengthening Bhutan’s economy. The city is envisioned as a ‘mindfulness city’ and the companies and businesses set up in the region will adhere to the country’s values and culture.
