The Australian city of Melbourne has overtaken Sydney to become the country’s most populous city. Melbourne’s boundaries have been redrawn to include the Melton district, which is located on Melbourne’s north-western border. Melbourne currently has a population of around 5.8 million, which is about 19,000 more people than Sydney. According to demographers, more people have left Sydney to settle in other parts of Australia than have moved to the city. In Melbourne’s case, internal and international migration have led to population growth. Prior to this, Sydney held the title of Australia’s most populous city for more than 100 years.
